BRETT OUT OF SUEDE.

Paul Rider - Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Brett Anderson out of Suede in 1993.  Suede are back in business and it reminded me of this picture which I have always loved. The powers decided it was too dark and a bit pretentious at the time so it was never used but what do they know.  Dark and pretentious are two of the reasons I like it, along with the way Brett and Bowie mirror each other.

The Happy Mondays reform!

Paul Rider - Wednesday, December 07, 2011

Actually they don't, or probably not.  They were on Tuesday but don't seem sure today, but at least they are living up to their reputation for flagrant unreliability.  So that's something to hold on to in these troubled and uncertain times.

Anyway here in the meantime is a picture of them in 1992.  Ladies and gentlemen - The Happy Mondays!

Tom Hibbert

Paul Rider - Monday, September 05, 2011

The journalist Tom Hibbert was the funniest, sharpest and most willfully eccentric person I ever worked with, probably ever met.  The news of his death last week is very, very sad.

When I think of Tom I am overwhelmed by countless memories of our frequently bizarre adventures together in the world of pop and beyond. They run from the absurd, Mallorca with Billy Idol and his mum and dad or Blackpool pier with Black Lace, through the surreal Mrs Thatcher at 10 Downing Street, to the poignant, Dennis Potter shortly before his death.  They were never easy, nothing with Tom was, traveling was a nightmare, but they were always special moments, always entertaining.

To say that I will miss him is not quite right; I already do that because Tom went missing over ten years ago when illness curtailed his journalism, and life. But I will say I am proud to have known him and been his friend, exactly the kind of puffed up sentiment Tom would have summarily deflated, but I feel it nevertheless.
